KeyMan v1.1
---------------------------------------------------------------------
copyright 1995 Stand Alone & Ben Gottlieb

* What's it do?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	KeyMan (KEYboard MANager) is a collection of enhancements to the
four built-in keyboards on the Newton. It also modifies Palm
Computing's Graffiti (tm) handwriting recognition package, if
installed.

* What's in this archive?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	There are four Newton software packages and three text files in
this archive. They are:
	* KeyMan.txt	document you're now reading. 'Nuff said.
	* KeyMan.pkg	software package you'll install on your Newton.
	* SASReg.pkg	software package you'll install on your Newton to
					enter the password you get when you register
					KeyMan.
	* Register.txt	read me file describing the Register software.
	* Register.pkg	software package you can install on your Newton
					to use Register, which will allow you to pay for
					KeyMan via email.

* Installing KeyMan
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	First off, you must get the KeyMan software package onto your
Newton. You can do this using the Newton Connection Kit (for Mac or
Windows), the Newton Package Downloader, or the Newton Package
Installer. See the documentaion with each of these for more
information on installing packages with them.

* Using KeyMan
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	KeyMan modifies each of the four built in keyboards, as well as
Graffiti, if installed. These changes are detailed below. Note that
KeyMan is an autopart, which means it has no extras drawer icon.
	It changes the fonts used in the QWERTY, numeric, and dates
keyboards, increasing their size by a point, and greatly increasing
their readability.

* QWERTY-style keyboard
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	KeyMan adds a row of function keys to the top of this keyboard.
Many of these functions require that there be a current cursor point.
If there isn't one, simply tap somewhere in the notepad, and a
flashing cursor will appear there.
The Key functions are, from left to right:

Shift:	(an upward pointing arrow.) This controls whether the
	function keys are shifted. Only the Cut, Copy, Paste and
	Graffiti keys are affected by this, and they are explained below.
	When the Shift key is hilited, the Cut, Copy, and Paste keys
	all show a small scissors icon in their middle, and the Graffiti
	key turns into a small 'i'.

All: This selects all text in the current area...if it's in the
	Notepad, it will select the current paragraph, if it's in an
	input line, it will select the entire line.

Cut:	If the Shift key is not selected, this will cut the currently
	selected text into a temporary clipboard. This will replace
	whatever is currently there (note: this is NOT the same clipboard
	that appears when you drag an item to the edge of the screen.) It
	deletes the current selection.
		If the KeyMan shift key is down, then this will add the
	selection to KeyMan's list of clippings (accessible via the
	shifted Paste key, see below.) It also deletes the current
	selection.

Copy:	This key is identical to the Cut key (both shifted and
	unshifted versions) except that it leaves the selection
	untouched.

Paste:	This key, if unshifted, will paste the contents of KeyMan's
	clipboard at the current cursor location. If the Shift key is
	down, it will pop up a menu of everything in KeyMan's list of
	clippings (you can add to this list with the Shifted Cut and Copy
	keys,) as well as an option to delete an item. Tapping an item
	will paste it into the cursor's current location. Tapping "Delete
	an item" will pop up another menu, from which you can choose an
	item to remove from the list.

Special: When tapped, this key will pop up a list of options. If
	there is no current cursor point, only three options will appear:

	Open Styles:	This will open the Styles palette, allowing you
		to change font and ink preferences.

	Don't Ask to Add Words:	Tapping this will toggle on and off the
		"Add word to dictionary" feature of the keyboard. Many
		people find this annoying, so this provides a method to turn
		it off. If it's off, there will be a check mark next to this
		item, and the little dictionary at the lower left of the
		keyboard will turn into a closed book.

	Add Leading Space:	This governs pasting items. It it has a check
		next to it, than words and phrases pasted into the Newton
		will have a space added before it is pasted in. Tapping it
		will toggle the check.

	If there is a current cursor location, than an additional three
	options will appear. These are:

	Paste Current Time:	This will paste the current time at the
		cursor location.

	Paste Current Date:	This will paste the current date.

	Paste My Name: This will paste your name (as entered in your
		preferences.)

Graffiti/Info:	If this button is tapped and Graffiti is installed,
	Graffiti will open, and the keyboard will close. If it's not
	installed, but Gesture Mosaic (from Mosaic Input Technologies)
	is installed, Gesture Mosaic will open. If the shift key is down,
	a window will open giving information about KeyMan.

Forward Delete:	This will just delete the character in front of the
	cursor.

* Numeric keyboard
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	This keyboard gets a display appended to the top of it, with an
on/off switch to the right of it. When it's off, the keyboard works
as normal. If you tap on the switch, the calculator will turn on.
Now the keyboard will function like a standard, four function
calculator. Tap on the number or operation keys (+, -, /, and *) to
add them to the current expression, or tap on the '=' key to evaluate
it. It can handle either the '.' or ',' as decimal points (depending
on your locale.) Tapping on the display will paste the results after
the current cursor position.

* Phone keyboard
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	This keyboard adds a display and a switch to the basic layout.
The switch has three positions. In the first poisition (it looks like
a switch) the keyboard operates as normal. In the second position (a
small phone handset) tapping a key plays the tone associated with
that key on a real phone. In the third position, (a small phone on
the hook), tapping a number appends it to the display. When you're
ready to dial, just tap on the display and a sequence of tones will
be played through the speaker, corresponding to the number in the
display.

* Dates keyboard
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	The dates keyboard has a small date picker added to it. This
allows you easily select a date. Tapping on the arrows to the left
and right of the month will decrease or advance the month,
respectively, and tapping on the year will pop up a list of years.
Below the date picker are three buttons. The first, "All", will
select all text at the current insertion point. The second, "Today",
will move the calendar to today's date. The last, a small arrow, will
paste the selected date into the cursor position.

* Graffiti Changes
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	KeyMan adds two buttons to the Graffiti screen. The first is a
close box, so that you can easily close Graffiti with just a tap. It
also adds a keyboard button. When tapped, it will close Graffiti and
open the standard QWERTY style keyboard. In addition, if you close
Graffiti, then the next time you open a keyboard (either through
double tapping in an edit line or tapping the keyboard button) then
Graffiti will open instead.

* Registering KeyMan
---------------------------------------------------------------------
	You have a 30 day trial period in which to examine KeyMan,
during which it will function fully. Should you wish to register,
you'll need to do one of the following:

	* Send us a check for $15 to:
		Stand Alone
		1146 Morse Ave., #3C
		Chicago, IL, 60626, USA

	* Using CompuServe, GO SWREG, and register ID # 5666.

	* Using Flash Sheridan's Register program (enclosed in the KeyMan
archive) and either NewtonMail (built into the Newton) or Catamount
Software's Aloha (shareware, $50, for more info, contact Catamount at
info@catamount.com).
		Open up Register, fill in the application (KeyMan:SAS),
the	amount ($15), and your credit card information, and email it.

	However you register, PLEASE be sure to include an email address
(it's not vital, but it will result in MUCH speedier service) and
your name, as entered in the Prefs -> Personal section of your Newton.
This is used to generate the password we send you to unlock KeyMan,
so it has to be exact.

	Once you register, you will receive a password from us. To use it,
install the SAS Register package (also enclosed in the KeyMan
archive), select "KeyMan" from the pop up menu at the top, and enter
the password. You should get a message confirming the password. You
may then remove the SAS Register application from you Newton.
